How to help keep parents connected as they age

Most older people want to live independently in their homes and communities for as long as possible[1],  ‘Aging in place’ refers to choosing to live in your home or your community in your later years. Aging in place has many benefits, primarily it gives the individual emotional comfort, familiarity and a sense of home.

Reframing Aging – The State of Aging in Ireland Report

Age Action, an organization that aims to empower older people to live full and independent lives at home, released a report in 2022 titled The State of Aging in Ireland. The report conducted research and analysis of the state of aging in Ireland in a bid to change the narrative around aging and make recommendations on how we can best champion the older person.
The key findings from the report included:
•    More than one in four adults in Ireland is aged 60 or older.
•    Growing older does not mean that we lose our diverse identities or aspirations.
•    Most older people (aged 65+) are homeowners. Four out of five (80.8%) own their home outright.
•    One in four (25%) people aged 60-74 and more than half (56%) of people aged 75 or older do not use the internet.
•    Nearly 50% of women aged 65+ in rural areas, and around 28% of men, say they have “unmet” transport needs.

Reports like ‘Reframing Aging’ are vital as they help to challenge stereotypes around aging and demonstrate areas where additional support, such as user-friendly technology and Vital Sign Monitoring, can be provided to make aging in place possible.

Here’s some ways you can help keep your parents connected as they age:

Regular Communication

Visits aren’t always possible, especially for those that live away from parents or are juggling other commitments like having a family of your own or working full-time. While visits may not be possible, there are other ways to stay in regular contact.
•    Frequent Phone Calls: Set a schedule for regular phone calls. Even short daily or weekly conversations can make a big difference.
•    Video Calls: Use platforms like Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime to add a visual element to your conversations. Seeing each other can enhance the feeling of connection.
•    Family group chat: Set up a family group chat, where participants can share updates, news and photos.

How HaloCare can help
Age Action estimated that two-thirds of older persons do not use the internet or lack the basic skills to do so confidently and safely. This is where HaloCare can help.

HaloCare’s HaloPad provides one central location where clients can easily share photos, make video and phone calls. The HaloPad has been specifically developed with a user-friendly interface so even those who don’t feel confident using technology, and might find other video platforms overwhelming to use, will enjoy staying connected via the HaloPad.

Health & Wellness

Asking questions and staying up to date on parents’ health helps ensure you’re aware of what’s going on in their lives and can be comforting for the individual to know there’s a listening ear.
•    Attend Medical Appointments: If possible, accompany them to medical appointments to stay informed about their health and show your support. If you cannot physically attend appointments, ask what options are available to join remotely.

How HaloCare can help
HaloCare uses Vital Sign Monitoring technology to provide a homecare solution that records vital signs without the need for in-person visits. As outlined in the Reframing Aging report, lack of transportation can have a major impact on wellbeing, Vital Sign Monitoring can help bridge the gap to accessing healthcare, for those who may find it more challenging to travel to appointments.

Vital Sign Monitoring can be used to measure blood pressure, pulse, heart rate and monitor oxygen levels. This information can then be used to support clinicians to make informed decisions about treatment and care. This means vital information can be captured from the comfort of home.

The HaloPad also has a Calendar feature where the Circle of Care can stay up to date on the client's schedule and appointments, at the request of the client. This helps keep everyone connected to the client’s well-being.

Shared Activities

Sharing a hobby or taking an interest in a parent’s hobbies can provide plenty of discussion points and can be a great topic to connect on. Here’s some ways to stay connected on shared activities.
•    Hobbies and Interests: Engage in hobbies or activities that they enjoy, whether it’s gardening, cooking, or reading the same book and taking the time to discuss together.
•    Exercise Together: If possible, engage in light physical activities together, such as walking, which can be beneficial for both health and well-being.

How HaloCare can help
Using the HaloPad clients will be able to access the HaloCare Exercise Programme, a series of light exercises, designed to cater to all abilities and fitness levels. These exercises can be done together from the comfort of home.

The HaloPad also has a built-in web browser to make accessing online content easier for clients and can be done at the touch of a button. Clients can also easily access their favourite newspapers online or can use the built-in radio feature to stay up to date on current affairs.  This can help keep individuals connected and give them a sense of independence and interest in what’s going on in the world.

Conclusion
By combining these strategies, you can maintain a strong and supportive connection with your aging parents, looking after their well-being from the comfort of home.

Integrating HaloCare as part of a homecare solution, supports clients to stay connected and take control of their care, creating an environment where clients are safe and can enjoy the benefits of living independently.
